The Best 12-Month Lawn Care Plan: How to Keep Your Lawn Green All Year

The Best 12-Month Lawn Care Plan: How to Keep Your Lawn Green All Year

Posted on January 14 2025, By: Jack Skilling

One of the most common questions we hear from customers after transforming their lawn with The Lawn Pack is:

"What do I do next to keep my lawn looking this good?"

The truth is, great lawns aren’t created with a single treatment. Grass grows and behaves differently throughout the year, meaning your lawn needs different nutrients, care and protection each season.

The key to long-term results is following a year-round lawn care plan that includes overseeding, seasonal fertilisers and good lawn maintenance habits.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to care for your lawn across all four seasons and how combining The Lawn Pack with our seasonal packs can help maintain a thick, healthy lawn year-round.

Why Lawn Care Needs a Year-Round Plan

Grass growth changes significantly throughout the year.

In spring, lawns focus on growth and recovery.
In summer, they need stress protection from heat and drought.
In autumn, the focus shifts to root strengthening and disease resistance.
In winter, lawns require protection and resilience.

Without adjusting your lawn care routine throughout the year, your grass can quickly lose its thickness, colour and health.

That’s why we designed our Seasonal Packs — to give lawns exactly what they need at the right time of year.

Spring Lawn Care (March - May)

Spring is when most lawns start to recover from winter and begin growing again.

If your lawn is thin, patchy or moss-affected, this is the ideal time to renovate and overseed.

Start with The Lawn Pack

Our flagship product, The Lawn Pack, is designed to repair lawns and establish thick, healthy turf. It contains everything needed to kick-start strong growth and improve lawn coverage.

Each pack includes:

  • Stronger Roots Grass Seed – A durable dwarf ryegrass mix with excellent germination rates

  • Seeding Success Fertiliser – Provides nutrients for up to 3 months

  • Biostimulant Booster – Encourages stronger root development

  • Mycorrhizal Seed Enhancer – Expands root surface area by over 300%

  • Deeper Green Iron Sulphate – Helps tackle moss and improve colour

All products are pre-measured for your lawn size, making application simple even for beginners.

If your lawn has less than 50% existing coverage, we recommend using The Lawn Pack Plus, which includes double the seed for larger repairs.

When to Apply

From mid-March onwards, keep an eye on temperatures.

For best results:

  • Wait until temperatures reach 12°C consistently

  • Ensure no frost is forecast

  • Soil temperatures must be warm enough for seed germination

Prepare Your Lawn

Before applying the pack, carry out some basic preparation:

  • Mow the lawn

  • Aerate compacted soil

  • Apply top dressing if needed

These steps improve seed-to-soil contact and dramatically increase germination success.

Once conditions are right, simply apply The Lawn Pack following the guide provided.

Maintain Growth with the Spring Pack

If your lawn already has good coverage, or once your new grass has established, you can maintain strong growth using our Spring Pack.

This pack delivers up to three months of nourishment and promotes dense, green growth.

It includes:

  • Greener Growth Fertiliser (NPK 20-10-10) – A blend of fast-release and slow-release nitrogen for immediate colour and sustained growth

  • Biostimulant Booster – Encourages root and shoot development

Apply 8 weeks after using The Lawn Pack, mowing the lawn beforehand to around 20mm.

Summer Lawn Care (June - August)

Summer can be the most challenging season for lawns.

Heat, drought and heavy use can stress grass and cause thinning.

To keep your lawn healthy during warmer months, it needs nutrients that encourage growth without scorching.

The Summer Pack

Our Summer Pack is designed specifically for hot conditions.

It includes:

  • Summer Thriver Fertiliser (NPK 19-3-9) – Promotes healthy green growth for up to 3 months

  • Biostimulant Booster – Strengthens roots and improves drought tolerance

The coated fertiliser formulation prevents scorching and can be applied even during dry weather.

When to Apply

Apply the Summer Pack:

  • June – August

  • Around 8–12 weeks after the Spring Pack

Mow beforehand if required, but avoid cutting the grass too short during hot weather.

Autumn Lawn Care (September - November)

Autumn is one of the most important seasons for strengthening your lawn before winter.

Instead of encouraging rapid growth, autumn fertilisers focus on:

  • Root development

  • Disease resistance

  • Turf density

The Autumn Pack

Our Autumn Pack prepares your lawn for colder conditions while maintaining strong turf health.

Each pack contains:

  • Autumn Preparation Fertiliser (NPK 10-5-10 + MgO) – Encourages thicker grass without excessive growth

  • Biostimulant Booster – Improves root mass and soil microbiology

Apply the Autumn Pack 8–12 weeks after the Summer Pack, between September and November.

Before application:

  • Mow the lawn if necessary

  • Maintain a slightly higher cutting height (around 25mm)

Winter Lawn Care (December - February)

Winter brings new challenges including:

  • Frost

  • Waterlogging

  • Reduced sunlight

  • Increased disease pressure

To protect your lawn during this period, strengthening the roots and turf structure is essential.

The Winter Pack

Our Winter Pack helps protect your lawn during the colder months.

Each pack contains:

  • 2x Winter Protection Fertiliser (NPK 6-5-10) – Supports root strength and disease resistance

  • 2x Iron Sulphate Treatments – Improves colour and hardens turf

  • Biostimulant Booster – Supports root development and soil health

Unlike other seasonal packs, the Winter Pack includes two applications, spaced at least six weeks apart.

Applications can be made between September and March, provided frost is not forecast.

If mowing is required, raise the cutting height slightly to around 30mm.

Essential Lawn Care Techniques to Use Year-Round

While seasonal fertilisers play a major role in lawn health, regular maintenance is just as important.

Make sure to incorporate these key practices into your lawn care routine.

Regular mowing

Grass growth varies throughout the year.

Typical mowing frequency:

  • Spring: up to twice per week

  • Summer: once per week or less during drought

  • Autumn: occasional mowing

  • Winter: usually none

Maintain cutting heights between 20-30mm depending on season.

Weed control

Healthy lawns naturally outcompete weeds, but occasional treatment may still be required.

You can:

  • Remove weeds manually

  • Use selective lawn weed killers if necessary

Watering

Thanks to the UK climate, most lawns rarely require watering.

However during heatwaves or drought:

  • Water deeply every few days

  • Avoid light daily watering

Aeration

Aerating in autumn can:

  • Reduce soil compaction

  • Improve drainage

  • Increase oxygen flow to roots

This improves overall lawn resilience.

A Simple 12-Month Lawn Care System

Following a seasonal plan keeps lawn care simple.

The Lawn Pack system works like this:

Spring: Repair and overseed
Summer: Protect against heat and drought
Autumn: Strengthen roots and turf
Winter: Harden and defend the lawn

By combining The Lawn Pack with our seasonal fertiliser packs, you can maintain a thick, healthy lawn all year round.

Final Thoughts

Creating a great lawn isn’t about one-off treatments - it’s about consistency.

By following a structured 12-month lawn care plan and combining it with good lawn maintenance practices, you’ll keep your lawn thick, green and resilient throughout the seasons.

With the right approach, your lawn will continue improving year after year - and you might even find your neighbours getting a little jealous.
