The Best 12 Month Lawn Care Plan: How Overseeding, Seasonal Fertilisers and Year-Round Treatments Can Give You Healthy, Green Grass Long-Term
Posted on January 14 2025,
As a business, one thing we frequently hear from our customers is that, after putting in the hard work and getting their grass looking fabulous with The Lawn Pack, they’re eager to know what comes next and how they can maintain the results. We get it - lawn care isn’t a one time fix and knowing what to do next can be confusing, especially as we enter the colder months.
That’s why we’ve created our Seasonal Packs to make it easy to keep a lush, healthy lawn throughout the whole year. In this blog, we’ll go over the benefits of using The Lawn Pack itself and how to combine it with the season-specific packs with (plus traditional lawn care techniques) to get results that last.
Spring lawn care
If your lawn is in bad condition or needs thickening up, you’ll want to start here. If you’ve already got healthy grass with good coverage, feel free to skip forward to the section on the Spring Pack.
Our flagship product, The Lawn Pack, is designed to address patchy, thin, or mossy lawns and transform them into lush, durable turf. Even if you're a total novice, our easy-to-follow guides ensure a professional-quality lawn by encouraging rapid green growth and establishing a hard-wearing lawn resilient to bad weather conditions, weeds, moss, diseases, and heavy use.
So what’s included?
Our lawn care package includes premium products tailored for optimal results:
-
Stronger Roots Grass Seed: A fast-growing, durable Dwarf Ryegrass mix for year-round vitality. This DEFRA-certified blend ensures purity, high germination rates, and disease resistance.
-
Seeding Success Fertiliser: Provides nutrients for up to 3 months that encourage strong root development and sustained plant growth
-
Biostimulant Booster: Enhances root networks and plant health
-
Mycorrhizal Seed Enhancer: Expands root surface area by over 300%
-
Deeper Green Iron Sulphate: Promotes rapid greening and moss control
To make things even easier, a comprehensive application guide is provided with each pack and each product is precisely measured for your lawn size. By combining these high-quality components, our package delivers a comprehensive method to achieve a lush, healthy lawn. Please note, if your existing lawn has less than 50% coverage then we’d recommend switching to The Lawn Pack Plus, as this has double the seed mix and therefore double the coverage!
Before you apply The Lawn Pack, you’ll want to make sure weather conditions are optimal to get the best results from our products. As weather conditions are becoming increasingly varied, from mid-March onwards you’ll want to keep your eye on the forecast and wait until there have been consistent temperatures of 12 degrees or more for at least two weeks before you seed otherwise the ground will be too cold and the seedlings may not germinate. You want to avoid any sudden frosts that can damage the seeds.
The good news is, the waiting game gives you the perfect opportunity to carry out some prep work to give the seeds the best conditions for germination. The main three techniques we’d strongly encourage you to use are mowing, aeration and applying topdressing. These methods, while they can seem a bit time-consuming, will make all the difference when it’s time for your grass to grow!
Once you’ve prepped your lawn and the weather is good, it’s time to apply The Lawn Pack!
You can get a full guide to the application process on our website: The Lawn Pack Guide
Did you know The Lawn Pack and The Lawn Pack Plus can be applied anytime in the growing period which is usually between March-October. Ensure to wait 8 weeks post application to proceed with that or the next season's fertiliser pack.
A Spring Spruce-Up - The Spring Pack
Now your new lawn is well established, or you’re only looking to improve the existing lawn, you can keep the momentum going by using the first of our four seasonal packs - the Spring Pack.
This pack provides up to three months of nourishment and is specifically formulated to encourage as much healthy growth as possible. You’ll find the following included:
-
Greener Growth Fertiliser: This high-quality spring fertiliser is ideal for domestic lawns, promoting lush, deep green growth for up to 12 weeks. It combines fast-release nitrogen for immediate results within days and slow-release nitrogen to sustain growth without excessive mowing (NPK 20-10-10)
-
Biostimulant Booster: Our organic biostimulant encourages healthy shoot and root development, significantly increasing root mass and grass blade density.
If you’ve used The Lawn Pack or The Lawn Pack Plus, you should wait at least 8 weeks before application, making sure to follow the guide included in the pack closely. Give your lawn a cut beforehand to ensure maximum absorption of the products - ideal grass height at this time of year is around 20mm.
Skip The Scorching - The Summer Pack
There’s no getting around it, high temperatures and the potential for drought pose a big threat to your lawn, so you’ll need to make sure it’s able to handle the heat. We’ve specially formulated the Summer Pack for use in periods of high temperatures and low rainfall. The products included promote healthy growth without the risk of scorching:
-
Summer Thriver Fertiliser: This premium fertiliser is high in nitrogen, encouraging lush growth for up to three months. Its coated formulation prevents scorching during drought conditions and includes organic components with stress-relieving and biostimulant properties, essential for maintaining green grass during summer. It does not require watering in and can be applied during dry periods. (NPK: 19-3-9)
-
Biostimulant Booster: Our organic biostimulant develops a more resilient lawn capable of withstanding summer stresses
Apply the Summer Pack anytime June-August during periods of high temperatures and low rainfall to keep your lawn vibrant and healthy all summer long, ideally 8-12 weeks after using the Spring Pack. Depending on growth, you can mow your lawn beforehand to a height of around 20mm - just make sure you don’t go too short!
Preparing For The Cold - The Autumn Pack
As the saying goes, all good things come to an end, and as we move out of summer it’s time to prepare your lawn for the cold that lies ahead. Our Autumn Pack is designed to promote thicker growth and deeper roots without excessive top growth, and enhance resistance against diseases often brought on by Autumn's warm, wet conditions. In this pack you’ll find:
-
Autumn Preparation Fertiliser - This premium fertiliser is ideal for readying your lawn for winter. It contains low levels of fast and slow-release nitrogen to encourage thickening and maintain green colour without promoting disease-prone, soft growth. Additional magnesium further enhances green colour. (NPK 10-5-10 + 2% MgO)
-
Biostimulant Booster - Our organic biostimulant significantly increases root mass, improves soil microbiology, enhances grass blade density, and boosts nutrient absorption.
For optimal results, apply the Autumn Pack 8-12 weeks after the Summer Pack, between September and November, to ensure your lawn remains lush and resilient throughout the colder months. As with previous packs, you can mow your lawn beforehand if it needs it, but don’t go quite as short as you would for spring/summer - a good height would be around 25mm.
Protect Your Lush Lawn - The Winter Pack
After putting in months of hard work to get your lawn looking great, it’s very important you give it the defenses it needs when the dreaded winter season arrives. There are several factors that can contribute to the all-too-common winter die-back, such as: limited sunlight, soil compaction due to waterlogging, increased risk of diseases from the cold, frosty weather and pest activity.
Our Winter Pack is designed to fortify your lawn against these problems, helping to maintain its health and prepare it for a vibrant spring. Our comprehensive pack offers over 12 weeks of support, ensuring your lawn remains resilient throughout the colder months. Included in each pack is:
-
2x Winter Protection Fertiliser: Professional, granular fertiliser to support root development and increase plant strength for better disease resistance during the colder months. (NPK: 6-5-10)
-
2x Deeper Green Iron Sulphate: Double dose of iron sulphate for turf hardening, increasing disease resistance and producing a rapid green-up of turf. This can also be used to help tackle moss if needed.
-
Biostimulant Booster: Organic biostimulant to significantly increase the mass of the root network. Also improves soil microbiology, grass blade density and nutrient absorption.
Unlike our other seasonal packs, the Winter Pack contains 2 applications to be done at least 6 weeks apart. Application can be done any time from September - March, but make sure you’ve waited at least 8 weeks since using your Autumn Pack and that no frost is forecast. Please note, unless your grass has continued to grow then we wouldn’t recommend mowing before application. If you do, raise the cutting height by 5mm and aim for a height of around 30mm.
By following the above, you should see a significant reduction in winter die-back and have your lawn in the best possible condition heading back into spring. As it starts warming up, you can then assess the health of your lawn, prepare to tackle any problems and then overseed bare patches using the methods detailed in the first section of this guide.
Techniques To Use Year-Round
As much as we’d like it to be, it’s not all about The Lawn Pack! You’ll need to make sure you incorporate traditional lawn care techniques into your routine as well, as grass needs consistent love and attention to keep thriving. Make sure you keep up with:
-
Regular mowing: obviously the frequency you mow will vary widely throughout the year depending on growth rate, from twice a week or more in the spring to no mowing at all during the winter if growth has stopped entirely. Just make sure you don’t let the grass grow too long (or too short!) - aiming for heights of 20-30mm depending on the season
-
Weed control: Our products will make your lawn naturally more resistant to weeds, as the grass will be healthier and therefore able to outcompete invasive plants. However, if you do see weeds cropping up, either pull by hand or use a product like Weedol For Lawns to spot treat
-
Watering: Thanks to the reliably wet weather of these great isles, through much of the year you won’t need to water your grass at all to keep the soil moist. However, during periods of high temperatures or drought, your lawn may need more frequent watering to stay healthy
You could also aerate your lawn again in autumn to give your soil a boost, reduce compaction and improve drainage before it gets too cold.
By following this structured 12-month lawn care plan, breathing new life into your lawn using The Lawn Pack and utilising our tailored seasonal packs, you can have the lawn you’ve always dreamed and keep it thriving year-round. Combining our products with the traditional lawn care methods will give you professional-standard lawn without breaking the bank, and you’ll soon be the recipient of some serious lawn envy.
