5 Mistakes to Avoid During Your Autumn Lawn Renovation
Posted on September 03 2025,
Autumn is the perfect time to renovate your lawn. The cooler temperatures, consistent rainfall, and warm soil create ideal conditions for growth.
But even with the right timing, simple mistakes can undo all your hard work.
If you’re planning to give your lawn a makeover this autumn, avoid these 5 common mistakes to make sure your renovation delivers the lush, green results you’re hoping for.
1. Renovating Too Late in the Season
Timing is everything when it comes to autumn lawn renovations. If you leave it too late, into late October or early November, cooler temperatures and shorter days will slow seed germination and root development.
Best time to renovate:
In most parts of the UK, aim to start your renovation between late August and early October. This gives grass seed time to germinate and establish before winter.
2. Skipping Scarification
Some homeowners skip scarification thinking it’s too harsh, but removing thatch and moss is essential for giving new grass seed the best chance to root and thrive. Seeds need good seed-to-soil contact, and applying over a layer of thatch will prevent this. Scarification also lets air, nutrients and water reach the roots.
Scarify first to:
- Remove thatch and dead material
- Improve seed-to-soil contact
- Let air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone
3. Using the Wrong Grass Seed
Not all grass seed is the same. Using poor-quality or the wrong type of seed for your conditions (e.g. shade, heavy use, etc.) can lead to disappointing results. The Lawn Pack Renovation Kit includes a high-quality, quick-germinating seed mix that is resilient in UK weather

4. Not Feeding After Seeding
A common mistake is to overseed and water, but skip the fertiliser. Your new and existing grass both need nutrients to recover and grow strong before winter sets in. You can use either a seeding fertiliser to get the best from your seeds, or an autumn-specific lawn feed.
Using an autumn-specific lawn feed:
- Helps new roots develop
- Builds disease resistance
- Supports lush regrowth
5. Watering Incorrectly
Inconsistent watering is one of the fastest ways to ruin a freshly seeded lawn. Either overwatering (leading to rot) or letting new seed dry out (leading to failure) can cause patchy results.
Watering tips for autumn renovation:
- Keep newly seeded areas consistently moist for the first 2 weeks
- Water once or twice a day in dry weather
- Avoid puddles or runoff. Light, even watering is best
If you’re lucky with rainfall, let nature help - but don’t leave it to chance.
